Prestatyn: A glorious links on the Welsh coastline

Why we’d rather be playing this beautiful links layout on the northern tip of Wales…

Prestatyn

The most northerly course in Wales, Prestatyn Golf Club is a sublime championship links venue that sits right on the coastline of the country.

The club is situated right on the northern coastline of the country, with several holes running alongside Prestatyn Beach, making it a true links layout.

The back nine is more inland, and with the railway line to contend with at times, another feature of your typical championship links!

History

Officially founded in 1905, the original layout at Prestatyn Golf Club would only last for around 15 years.

Shortly after the First World War, half of the property was lost for development purposes, which reduced the course to a shortened layout. However, within a year, the course had returned to its full complement of 18 holes.

Donald Steel, one of the greatest golf course designers of his generation, visited Prestatyn in the 1990s, making slight changes to the course to turn it into what it is today.

What makes Prestatyn Golf Club special?

Prestatyn is a course that is basically played in two loops, though unusually, the clubhouse sits in the very middle of the property.

The opening hole takes you north and out to the opening loop of ten holes, the majority of which are located by the beach.

The views are sublime out to the Irish Sea, but as always with a course this close to the coastline, you’ll be dealing with a sea breeze throughout the day!

Where does it rank?

23rd in Wales, 5th in North Wales

Where is Prestatyn Golf Club?

Prestatyn Golf Club is the northernmost golf course in all of Wales. It is on the coastline of north Wales, with Prestatyn Beach and Barkby Beach along the course boundary. The town of Prestatyn is around a mile to the west, while the Welsh border with England is only 20 miles southeast. For golfers travelling from outside the United Kingdom, Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are the two closest major international airports to the club.
