It is one of the most unique and diverse tournaments on the DP World Tour, but just what is the Scandinavian Mixed?

The Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed, to give it its full sponsorship name, brings the best of the DP World Tour and the Ladies European Tour for a brilliant week of golf.

The event began back in 1991 as the Scandinavian Masters, transforming into the Scandinavian Mixed in 2020 to bring the two tours together for one week each year.

Since its change to the Scandinavian Mixed, the three winners have been Jonathan Caldwell, Linn Grant (below) and Dale Whitnell – the latter being the defending champion.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Scandinavian Mixed

When and where will the Scandinavian Mixed take place?

The 2024 edition of the Scandinavian Mixed will take place between June 6-9, with the event being played at Vasatorp GC in Helsingborg, Sweden.

Who won last season’s tournament?

Englishman Dale Whitnell was the victor last year at Ullna GC. He won by three shots from American Sean Crocker to claim his maiden DP World Tour title.

How does the tournament work?

The Scandinavian Mixed brings together 78 players from the Ladies European Tour and 78 players from the DP World Tour for a four-day stroke-play event.

The men and women go up against each other on the same leaderboard and around the same course, with the only difference being the tees played from.

Ranking points are on offer in both the Official World Golf Rankings and the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, along with points available for Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup participation (where applicable).

The prize purse is the prize purse. There is no split down the middle for men and women (like you see at the ISPS Handa World Invitational), the $2 million prize purse is for the entire tournament.

What is the history around the Scandinavian Mixed?

The Scandinavian Mixed only dates back to 2020, but the original Scandinavian Masters goes all the way back to the start of the 1990s.

Back then, the event was solely on the European Tour (now DP World Tour), with the tournament’s history running across eight venues. Barseback Golf & Country Club was the most popular venue, hosting the tournament on 10 occasions.

Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood both won the event on three occasions, while Jesper Parnevik, Joakim Haeggman, Peter Hanson, Richard Johnson and Alex Noren all won on home soil.

The event transformed into the Scandinavian Mixed in 2020, but the event was cancelled (like many others) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 saw the first running of the tournament, which was hosted by the Swedish duo of Annika Sorenstam and Henrik Stenson. Since then, four more venues have played host to the event, taking the total tally to 12 around Sweden.

2022 saw even more history made. Sweden’s Linn Grant, playing on home soil, blew the rest of the field away. She finished 24-under-par (a tournament record), winning by nine shots (also a tournament record). Not only that, but she also became the first female golfer to ever taste victory on the DP World Tour.

How do golfers qualify to play in Vasatorp?

With the field being split down the middle (78 men and 78 women), there are a number of different entry categories for those in action.

Here are the categories of entries for the 2024 edition:

  • Winners of Race to Dubai Ranking Tournaments in 2022 with a prize purse of $1.75 million
  • Winners of Race to Dubai Ranking Tournaments in 2023 and 2024
  • Winners of DP World Tour and Challenge Tour Dual Ranking Tournaments in 2023 and 2024
  • Players in the top 116 of the Race to Dubai Rankings for 2023
  • Players finishing in the top 10 at the most recent Race to Dubai Ranking Tournament
  • The leading 72 players in the Ladies European Tour Exemption List
  • National spots and tournament invitations

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
