The DP World Tour has arrived at one of professional golf’s most picturesque venues.

Crans Montana in Switzerland houses Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club which not only boasts stunning views and sights but also a rich history on the circuit littered with world-class winners.

Seve Ballesteros, Nick Price, Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, Craig Stadler, Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood, Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia have all tasted success at this event, and most recently Ludvig Aberg.

The young Swede hasn’t returned this week as he prepares for surgery on his knee, but this is not to say a stellar host of European stars and fan favourites aren’t competing to win this prestigious title.

2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick often makes the trip to the continent for this special event and this time, he’s been joined by his brother Alex who is forging his way on the DP World Tour.

Niklas Norgaard, the Dane who conquered the Belfry to win the Betfred British Masters, isn’t in the field this week, but four-time DP World Tour winner Rasmus Hojgaard is.

Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston, Matt Wallace, Eddie Pepperell, Jordan Smith, and Matthew Jordan join the strong English contingent playing in Switzerland. Also in the field are 2018 Open champion Francesco Molinari and his fellow European Ryder Cupper Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Speaking of the Ryder Cup, the qualification process is now in its second week and for the rest of 2024, European players can only accrue points at DP World Tour events and not PGA Tour events, adding greater importance to the coming weeks for its members who don’t spend as much time in the USA as the established stars.

The Omega European Masters is the second event in the Back 9 portion of the DP World Tour schedule which features the circuit’s marquee events. Up next is the Irish Open at Royal County Down followed by the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

It was here 12 months when Aberg made it impossible for Team Europe captain Luke Donald to leave him out of his side which beat the Americans at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy. This year, the winner will receive $552,500 for their troubles, the lion’s share of the $3,250,000 purse on offer.

This purse is now dwarfed by the events played on the PGA Tour. Each of the eight Signature Events on the US tour held $20 million purses, while individual payouts at regular-season events in the LIV Golf League come to $25 million, with each winner receiving $4 million.
