Cobra clubs have become ambassadors for speed in the golf club market and this year they have added two new sets of irons to their DarkSpeed line-up. Following on from the success of the DarkSpeed range Cobra have introduced the DS-Adapt irons.

Modelled as game-improvement irons Cobra believe that golfers will be able to hit the ball higher and further than ever. Read our Cobra DS-Adapt Irons review to see if that is the case…

5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

I think these are exceptional game-improvement irons. The distances they offer up is extraordinary and are some of the longest game-improvement irons I have tested. They just fly off the club face.

As well as being long hitting these irons are all-round extremely playable clubs for a range of golfers. Easy to launch and feel great off the face thanks to a number of technological developments cobra have made.

PROS

  • Incredible distances
  • Feel nice off the face
  • Very forgiving on off-centred strikes

First Impressions

I found that behind the ball there was quite a lot of offset. The more offset, the less chance of golfers slicing the ball off the club face.

Something that stood out at address was how strong they look. The six iron looked more like a four iron, which was partially to do with the loft being stronger. This is designed to help increase the speed of the ball of the face.

NCG Verdict

The irons are fitted with a 360 Speedshell face insert which helps operates with 23% more face flexion. In simpler terms, when the ball hits the face it bends in and springs hotter than the previous generation of irons.

Although, I felt the irons felt really nice with strikes off the face they didn’t feel as firm as I thought they would be. The mid irons are extremely playable to allow shots into the green to be more controlled, despite being strong lofted and designed to have increased ball speeds.

Other technology advancements Cobra have made include a hollow body construction that is filled with a new soft foam with dampens the vibrations of the strike to help improve the feel and the sound. I could feel the difference this brought throughout testing as I knew the strike was fast but it didn’t feel clumsy or harsh.

Cobra DS-Adapt Irons review

Being game-improvement irons the forgiveness is a big factor in determining the success of the clubs and I have to say I was impressed with the performance of poorer strikes. When hitting the six iron I still managed to gain a carry distance of 196 yards from an off-centred strike which is pretty outrageous.

Across the board the distances were remarkable to the point that if I were to put these Cobra DS-Adapt irons in the bag then I probably wouldn’t carry anything longer than a six iron. I’d likely opt for five wedges because the clubs go so far that it would most likely create an issue at the bottom end in terms of gapping. Being able to hit my six iron 220 yards would be a massive advantage as I am going to be considerably more accurate with the six than a three or a four iron.

I would go as far as saying that there is an argument to say the numbers on the irons could and may be should be removed. With the lofts being so different they just don’t have the same meaning as other clubs. It does make sense to have such strong lofts on these irons with the centre go gravity being so low, which Cobra have introduced to make them more forgiving and easier to launch. Something most club golfers can benefit from.

Overall, I believe Cobra has done an outstanding job with these irons. Most of us amateur golfers are looking to simply have fun when we hit the golf course and these Cobra irons are exactly that.

Above all, these clubs go forever and if you’re a golfer looking to increase the distance from your iron play then these could be the clubs for you.
