First Impressions
These irons from Callaway for me go back to basics. The design is more old school, Callaway hasn’t tried to be flashy – I quite like it.
You can straight away tell that these are a game improvement iron. The top line has a decent thickness that sitting behind a ball gives you a lot of a nice bit of reassurance. Callaway has also launched a super game improvement version – the Quantum Max OS. As you can see above, the thickness difference between the two and certainly behind the ball the Max OS has a much larger head size.
NCG Verdict
I tested the Callaway Quantum Max irons both out on the course and at an indoor studio using a GC Quad to gather data.
Starting with a pitching wedge, this comes with a standard loft of 42°. Before hitting these I hit my normal Titleist T150 irons to get data to compare my averages. With my current PW, I was averaging 108 yards carry so the Callaway Quantum Max irons topped that by a couple of yards. The profile of this wedge is much larger and chunkier to look down at – but it’s nice to see lots of clubface. It gives confidence.
I did see a drop in spin by over 1000RPM but these irons are designed help players with height, launch and distance – they’re not focusing on spin and precision. In terms of height I did see an increase with these.
Moving onto 7 iron, the thicker top line became more obvious than I was use to but again it was a really nice inviting shaping. I was pretty pleased with the data. Carry distance was solid, spin was again less than I typically see.

To compare, the table below shows the 7 iron performance of the Quantum Max OS. Distance is very similar, as was peak height and spin rates. But visually the OS model was a lot larger, so if you’re a player really looking for that visually confidence then the OS is more for you.
These irons sound and feel great to use. Callaway has used urethane microspheres to absorb any unwanted vibrations. AI-optimised technology has also created a face that offers fasted ball speed and a more consistent launch. I found that with these irons and the Max OS the data was incredibly consistent.
Final Verdict
Overall, these irons are a great game improvement iron that has a simple design and works. If you’re mid to high handicapper these would be a great choice.
