TaylorMade SpeedSoft Golf Ball Review: NCG Summary

5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

The TaylorMade SpeedSoft is a golf ball that offers a surprising amount of spin and control around the greens. It also felt great on the putting surface with a really responsive feel off the face of the flat stick and wedge.

Despite the lack of urethane cover that more premium golf balls offer, this is still a great option for club golfers with its great distance capabilities.

PROS

  • Good all-round performance
  • Responsive feel
  • Plenty of spin and control around the greens

First Impressions

The SpeedSoft is available in a variety of finishes, including white, yellow, pink, and the eye-catching SpeedSoft Ink. The latter certainly brings a splash of flair for golfers looking to ditch traditional white.

Although, it’s not all about their outer layer designs, this golf ball feels as soft as they come. Off the putter and short irons, the feel is plush and forgiving, making it ideal for players who value touch around the greens.

NCG Review

While the SpeedSoft is only a two-piece construction, TaylorMade have not short changed the amount of tech included. The new PWRCORE is the engine and centre of the ball, offers a low compression without dulling the performance levels. It has an feel ultra-soft

The ionomer cover supports the soft feel while maintaining decent durability. Although it’s not urethane, the performance on spin is surprisingly high for a ball in this category.

Spin is where the SpeedSoft really surprises. Off the wedges, I was able to produce spin rates around 5,700–6,000 rpm, which was far higher than the TaylorMade Distance Plus ball. With a 7-iron, spin climbed to 6,100 rpm, and my carry distance was a respectable 162 yards, with an average ball speed of 116 mph. These numbers highlight consistent, playable performance – especially from a non-urethane, budget-friendly ball.

Off the tee, the SpeedSoft holds its own. My ball speeds reached 159 mph with a 281-yard carry and a total distance of 303 yards. The spin was also kept low, which was great for optimising my driver performance without ballooning any shots with a driver.

It was the same story on the greens. The soft compression translates into a responsive, muted feel off the putter face which was invaluable for delicate lag putts or pressure testers from five feet.

The TaylorMade SpeedSoft is a compelling all-rounder golf ball, ideally suited for mid to high handicap golfers but versatile enough to be used across a wide range of swing speeds. While it lacks the premium urethane cover of tour-level balls, it makes up for it with impressive spin numbers, great distance, and exceptional feel.
