Are you using the right size grips?

The grip is your only point of contact with the club throughout your swing, but how much have you thought about what grips you are using? Hannah Holden explains why it’s more important than you might think

Grip size is often an under-looked part of a custom fitting, but getting it wrong can really affect your performance.

So I met up with Nick Boulton, Ping’s European fitting manager, to find out more.

In the video we take a look at how your hand size affects what grips you should use, how you can tell if your grips are the wrong size, and how much grips can affect your ball flight.

You can watch the video above, or if you’d prefer to read my explanation then scroll down…

How do you know what size golf grips you need?

Typically what size golf grip you need will come down to the size of your hands. Players with smaller hands typically want smaller grips while golfers with bigger hands will suit something bulkier.

Ping golf grips have a colour coding system to help simplify this. By using the length of your hand, and the length of your longest finger, you can see which grip is most suitable for you.

White is the middle of the line standard size and from there you can move up or down the line-up depending on your hand size.

However, for players with arthritis, a bigger jumbo style grip can really help them more effectively grip the club, even if this doesn’t correlate directly to their hadn’t size.

Golf grip fitting doesn’t finish there. Everyone’s grip is different so there are a few key things to look out for. You want to make sure the end of your fingers on the left hand wrap all the way round the grip and touch the palm of your hand. It’s important that there isn’t a big gap here or that your fingers are really digging in.

How can you tell if your golf grips are the wrong size?

Using the pointers above can make it clearer if your golf grips are making you hold the club incorrectly. But your ball flight can also give you clues about how your grips are performing.

Having grips that are too thick for you will most likely stop you from being able to release the hands properly and cause you to lose the ball out to the right.

On the other end of the extreme, having grips that are too small could make your release too handsy and send the ball off to the left.

My suggestion would be to get measured and try a range of golf grip sizes to see which suits you and your game best.
