UK Courses - HARRY COLT
Rosses Point Co Sligo
DESIGNED by Colt in 1927, Rosses Point is one of Ireland’s most senior and established links.
With the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the majestic Benbulben peak on another, this is golf on a grand scale – and the course matches it. Some dramatic changes in elevation offer incredible views yet the best of the holes are arguably those on the flatter land in the middle.
Except, that is, for the famous 17th, a mighty par 4 that has decided many a match.

Fort Augustus, Highlands
LAID out along the banks of the Caledonian Canal near Loch Ness, Fort Augustus is one of the most challenging nine-hole courses in Scotland.
After staking out the course in 1924 Colt wrote: “The natural ridges and mounds will provide plenty of amusing shots, and your little course should be almost unique in this way.”

Muirfield, East Lothian
THE home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers had a long and illustrious history before Colt arrived on the scene, however, it is the famed links of Muirfield that is regarded as possibly Colt’s greatest masterpiece.
Sitting on the shores of the Firth of Forth and regarded as as punishing a test of golf as any course on the Open Championship rota, there are no hidden pitfalls here, only the punitive bunkers that Colt was famed for creating and the high rough that lines every fairway.
One of the largest changes Colt made was to the layout, which does not subscribe to a traditional links out and back, but follows a route that means a constant change in direction.

Borth and Ynyslas, Ceredigion
ESTABLISHED in 1885, Borth and Ynyslas has a strong claim as the oldest course in Wales, but it wasn’t until around 1945 that Colt made his mark.
Nestling on the estuary of the River Dovey and the beautiful sweep of Cardigan Bay, rolling humps and hollows and strategically placed bunkers, ensure this is an enjoyable challenge.

Brancepeth Castle, Durham
THIS beautiful parkland course is one of the finest in the North East of England and enjoys the dramatic backdrop of Brancepeth Castle.
And as you walk towards the 1st tee you’ll immediately get a view of this grand building that dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era. The holes here feature undulating fairways and a deep ravine that cuts through the course. Because of this natural hazard, fairways and tees are linked by suspended walkways that can add a little extra excitement.

Mannings Heath, Sussex
HOME to two high quality courses, the Colt designed Waterfall course is the jewel in the crown of Mannings Heath.
A mix of heathland, downland and parkland, the Waterfall is set among acres of mature woodland and streams with patchwork fairways. This helps to create a feeling of total seclusion in a setting that prompted the legendary Gary Player to include the 11th hole, known as The Valley, in his imaginary top 18 holes of golf in the world.

Sudbury, Middlesex
AFTER being formed in 1896, Sudbury moved to its present location in 1920 when it benefited from the services of Colt.
The parkland terrain makes for plenty of interesting holes with many of its par 4s stretching out over 400 yards to pulpit greens that are usually faster than expected. The short holes are also to be reckoned with as all are played in different directions and can be at the mercy of the wind.

Great Yarmouth and Caister, Norfolk
THE club of Great Yarmouth and Caister owes a great deal to its founder Dr Thomas Browne R.N whose determined efforts saw that a course was eventually built at North Denes.
More than 125 years later this traditional links course is still going strong and is renowned locally for the quality of its greens.
It also boasts a rich history thanks to Dr Browne and in the early years was adopted by the members of Royal Blackheath who provided captains, officers, members and trophies. As such the club still plays the Blackheath Medal.

Broadstone, Dorset
SET in the glorious Dorset countryside, Broadstone is one of the finest examples of an unspoilt heathland course in the South of England.
Redesigned by Harry Colt in 1914 this is a truly challenging layout and continues to attract a host of top national amateur events. Highlights include the long, sweeping par-4 13th that is protected by both sand and the contours of the land, plus the short holes that make for small, elusive targets.

Trevose, Cornwall
CORNWALL’S reputation as a golf destination is renowned, but it is only in recent years that the true merit of Trevose has been recognised.
The 18-hole championship course is a combination of links and downland golf where the difficulty of the challenge is governed by the strength and direction of the wind.
With wide-open fairways and little in the way of rough, there are plenty of opportunities to swing with freedom, but a ubiquitous stream that works its way across the course and some intelligent bunkering mean strength must always be allied to skill.
