Nedbank Golf Challenge: Who are our betting tips for victory in Sun City?

South Africa’s major, the Nedbank Golf Challenge, will see a star-studded field. But who wins…?

The Nedbank Golf Challenge is the penultimate event of the DP World Tour season, but who are our betting tips for glory?

66 players will take to Gary Player CC, with more than 40 of them having won on the DP World Tour.

The likes of Max Homa and Justin Thomas will make the journey from the United States to play in the competition, but do we fancy them to win this week?

Who will win in South Africa? Matt Coles gives us his betting tips for the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Nedbank Golf Challenge betting tips and preview

Venue: Gary Player CC, Sun City, South Africa
Date: November 9-12, 2023
Course stats: Par 72, 7,834 yards
Defending champion: Tommy Fleetwood (-11)

Tomm Fleetwood @ 7/1 with bet365

He just loves this event! Why would I not back Tommy Fleetwood to win for a third time?

The Englishman won this event in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then again in 2022 on its return.

He has five top-ten finishes in his last seven tournaments, and his last two victories have been at Gary Player CC. At 7/1, he is the favourite for another win on South African soil.

Ryan Fox @ 14/1 with bet365

Yes, I know that Ryan Fox has appeared on these pieces almost every week for the last few months. I may well be his biggest fan!

However, I have every right to keep putting him forward as one of my betting tips. He has three top-three finishes in his last five tournaments.

Fox also finished runner-up at the Nedbank Golf Challenge 12 months ago. He’s a good shout to go one better and to record his second win of 2023.

Thriston Lawrence @ 50/1 with bet365

Back on home soil in South African, Thriston Lawrence has to be worth an outside bet this week.

Lawrence won his home national open at the start of the season, victorious at the Investec South African Open Championship. He also won the BMW International Open in June.

At 50/1, Lawrence would class as one of the outsiders, but he is getting some of my money to at least finish in the top five this week.

Best of the rest…

Max Homa: After playing the Fortinet Championship and then the Ryder Cup, Max Homa took a break from tournament golf.

He returns this week, playing for the first time in six weeks. Homa is the highest-ranked golfer in the field, and at 8/1, he is also one of the favourites.

Justin Thomas: We know about Justin Thomas’ recent struggles, but could a change of scenery be the key to another professional victory?

The former World No.1 finished 5th at the Fortinet Championship, and showed some of his qualities at Marco Simone. Like Homa, he took a break from golf, and he returns this week. Thomas is 14/1 for the win.

The action also continues on the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour this week.

The PGA Tour returns to the Caribbean for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, while the LPGA Tour goes back to Pelican, for the renamed ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge.

Butterfield Bermuda Championship betting tips and preview

Venue: Port Royal GC, Southampton Parish, Bermuda
Date: November 9-12, 2023
Course stats: Par 71, 6,828 yards
Defending champion: Seamus Power (-19)

Thomas Detry @ 18/1 with bet365

This is a selection that might come as a surprise to a few people, as Thomas Detry is yet to secure a victory on any of the leading tours, with his only professional victory coming on the European Challenge Tour in 2016.

The Belgian’s form has not been at its best over the last few months, following a T13 result at the Open Championship.

However, Detry finished runner-up behind Ireland’s Seamus Power at last year’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Could the Belgian go one better this week?

Lucas Herbert @ 20/1 with bet365

Another man who has not been in the best of form recently is Australia’s Lucas Herbert.

Since winning the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan back in April, Herbert has missed five cuts and only achieved one top-25 finish in 12 starts.

However, Herbert is a former winner at Port Royal, taking the Butterfield Bermuda Championship title in 2021. Could the Aussie become the first two-time winner of the competition?

The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge betting tips and preview

Venue: Pelican Golf Club, Belleair, Florida, United States
Date: November 9-12, 2023
Course stats: Par 70, 6,268 yards
Defending champion: Nelly Korda (-14)

Nelly Korda @ 9/1 with bet365

She won at Pelican in 2021. She then defended her title at Pelican in 2022. Who’s arguing against Nelly Korda going for the three-peat this week?

I certainly won’t be, with the American aiming to do something she hasn’t done in the past. She has not won on the LPGA Tour since that victory 12 months ago.

However, a win at the Aramco Team Series in June, and being a key part of Team USA at the Solheim Cup in September, Korda is playing well. Look for her name at the top of the leaderboard come Sunday evening.

Lexi Thompson @ 20/1 with bet365

A lot was made of Lexi Thompson featuring on the PGA Tour a few weeks back.. She almost made the cut at the Shriners Children’s Open, and has been in good form since the Solheim Cup.

Thompson announced on her Instagram recently that she was suffering with some pain after falling down some stairs.

However, she also knows that she needs at least a solo-3rd finish to qualify for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. Look out for Lexi at Pelican.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
